School Counseling

Interested in growing your mental health advocacy? Interested in working with students to support their academic, behavioral and social development? The Master of Science Education in School Counseling is a 45-hour, two-year program focusing on school counseling in elementary, middle and secondary schools.

Why Study School Counseling at Northwest

Students enroll in a cohort setting allowing for individualized support from faculty and classmates.

The program trains students in a developmental approach to school counseling and the Missouri Comprehensive School Counseling Program. Using this approach, the program focuses on the three primary functions of the modern school counselor: consultation, coordination and counseling.

Admissions requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for admission:

  • undergraduate transcript from an accredited college which indicates:
    • a minimum overall GPA of 2.75 or above
    • a minimum GPA in the undergraduate declared major of 3.00
  • a written statement of career plans and philosophy of education
  • a written recommendation attesting to the applicant's potential as a graduate student and as a school counselor from a certified school counselor, a school administrator or a college professor

For students without a teaching degree, 12 additional hours of coursework will be required.
